In July 2009, Sanford Health acquired the former Hutchinson Technology manufacturing center in Sioux Falls, SD for the purpose of renovating it to house research operations. The building contains unique infrastructure that makes it a great fit for a transition from manufacturing to research. The facility will be home to all of Sanford Research/USD research center expansion in basic, translational and clinical programs.

The 299,000-square-foot facility includes clean manufacturing space that is being converted to research space, as well as computer rooms and office space with a full-service cafeteria. In addition, the 71-acre campus includes 40 undeveloped acres, allowing room for expansion.

The initial phase of Sanford’s research footprint will be comprised of approximately 28,000 square feet of laboratory space, 9,000 square feet of vivarium, 11,000 square feet of support and 32,000 square feet of research related office space.

The facility is located at the eastern entrance to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, a progressive, modern
community of 180,000 with a MSA population of 250,000. It will be highly visible at the intersection of
Interstate 90 and the Interstate 229 business loop that traverses the city.
